What is medical payments coverage (MedPay)?
MedPay coverage helps pay the cost of reasonable and necessary medical bills you and/or your passengers incur after being hurt in a car accident. It can apply no matter who is at fault in the accident.
What does MedPay cover?
In addition to medical expenses, MedPay can help pay for reasonable and necessary expenses related to a car accident that may not be covered by your health plan. It’s important to note that MedPay is not a substitute for health insurance. MedPay only covers certain medical expenses that are related to a car accident, up to a specified limit. If you have health insurance, MedPay can often help pay some or all of your health insurance deductible. Once you have met your deductible, your health insurance will then help pay for the rest of your medical expenses.
Here are a few examples of reasonable and necessary expenses potentially covered by MedPay:
- Hospitalization: MedPay coverage can help cover the cost of your hospital stay, including the cost of your room, meals, and any necessary medical procedures.
- Doctor visits: MedPay can help also cover the cost of your doctor visits.
- Ambulance fees: If you’re injured in an accident and need to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, MedPay coverage can help cover the cost of the ambulance ride.
- Surgery, X-rays, and dental procedures: If you need surgery, X-rays, and dental care as a result of an accident, MedPay coverage can help cover the cost of the surgery.
- Prosthetics and other medical devices: If you need prosthetics or other medical devices as a result of an accident, MedPay can help cover the cost of those devices.
- Substitute Services: MedPay can help cover the cost of hiring help if accident-related injuries interfere with household duties.
- Funeral expenses: In some cases, MedPay can also help cover the cost of funeral expenses if an accident results in loss of life.
What does MedPay not cover?
Medical payments coverage doesn’t cover:
- Expenses in excess of your policy’s MedPay coverage amount.
- Property damage for you or anyone else involved in an accident.
- Injuries sustained by the driver and passengers in another vehicle in an accident for which you’re at fault. This is covered by bodily injury liability coverage.
- MedPay typically does not cover lost wages due to an injury.
Who needs MedPay?
If you have a comprehensive health care plan with a low deductible, you may not need MedPay insurance. However,
if you have a high-deductible health plan or no health insurance at all, opting for Medical payments coverage may
prove to be the rescue you need should you find yourself in an auto accident with expensive medical bills to
pay.
What states require MedPay coverage?
Very few states in the United States require MedPay, but in many states, it’s an optional add-on to your car
insurance policy. If you have comprehensive health insurance with a low deductible, you may not need MedPay.
However, if you have a high-deductible health insurance plan or if you do not have health insurance, MedPay can
be a valuable way to protect yourself financially in the event of a car accident.
Does MedPay cover income loss coverage?
No, MedPay does not cover income loss. However, income loss coverage is a separate coverage offered by Elephant in Virginia, that you can elect to add to your car insurance policy. This coverage can apply if you are injured in a covered loss and unable to work because of it.

How much medical payments coverage do I need?
MedPay limits usually range from $500 to $5,000, depending on the state and insurer. Some people choose to carry MedPay equal to their health insurance deductible, so they can use MedPay to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses before their health insurance deductible is met. You might consider carrying a higher MedPay limit if you don’t have health insurance to help pay your medical bills after an accident.
What’s the difference between liability coverage and medical payments coverage?
Liability coverage and medical payments coverage are two types of car insurance that can help protect you financially in the event of an accident. However, they have different purposes and help cover different expenses.
Liability coverage is designed to protect you from financial responsibility for the other driver’s injuries and property damage if you’re at fault in an accident. This means that your insurance company will help pay for the other driver’s medical bills, car repairs, and other expenses, up to your policy limits.
Medical payments coverage is designed to pay for your own medical expenses, regardless of who is at fault in the accident. This can include things like ambulance rides, hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription medications.
What’s the difference between PIP and medical payments coverage?
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage (MedPay) are both types of car insurance that can help pay for your medical expenses after an accident. However, there are some key differences between the two types of coverage.
PIP is required in some states. It can help pay for medical expenses for you and passengers in your car, regardless of who is at fault in the accident. Depending on your state and coverage selections, PIP can also help cover lost wages, funeral expenses, and other expenses related to an accident.
MedPay is an optional type of car insurance that is available in many states. It’s similar to PIP in that it can help pay for your own medical expenses after an accident, substitute services and funeral expenses. However, MedPay typically doesn’t cover lost wages.
What are the limits of medical payments coverage?
Medical payments coverage doesn’t cover injuries in excess of your policy’s MedPay coverage limit. Nor does it cover property damage for you or anyone else involved in an accident. It also doesn’t cover injuries to the driver and passengers in another vehicle sustained in an accident for which you’re at fault. This is covered by bodily injury liability coverage.
Does my car insurance cover medical expenses?
Medical payments coverage is an optional coverage in most states. It helps pay for your medical costs if you cause an accident, whereas bodily injury liability coverage would only help pay for the other party’s medical expenses. Contact your agent to discuss your coverage options.
